The Debate (13th Oct.) [PLEASE READ!!!]

Saying this now so I can get this through to everyone! We all know how debates work, but are also able to be pulled off so it isn't out of control. Therefore, rules are VITAL for this!!!

When the topic is told to you all, go to the specific side you want to represent. A coin shall be flipped to decide who starts it off. (Or rock, paper, scissors... Or throw dice. Whichever is best.) After it starts, whoever is speaking must be heard and everyone must remain silent! When the person speaking has stopped, someone from the other team must be ready to bring in a point for their's. This will be done with the classic 'hands in the air' approach. One person will be running back and forth from each side and will be responsible for the topic they are 'hosting.' (Whether you make the person speaking hold something to signal they must be heard is up to you; but might make things better.) This includes, confirming who had their hand up first, making sure people are silent so everyone can hear and is confident in introducing and closing the topic they did. If a person has already spoken for their team, they can not speak again till another topic is started. This means everyone is able to have their say. The host will be different for each one as well.
Now because of the current situation we're in, there will be NO YELLING whatsoever. Doing it once will be a warning. Twice... Another warning. Third time, you just gave Kirsty the rights to ship you with anyone and/or anything! (Trust me, no limits there.) A fourth time and I'm sure Alex will want a serious word with you. Talk so everyone can hear you, yes. But don't over do it or we will be told off from the surrounding rooms.

Now then, any questions that you have or anything to add, please say so. (If it's asking what the topics are, Kirsty knows.)

Don't like what we are doing, then don't come on that evening. If we have to put that as an official rule, then so be it.

People aren't gonna shut up, it won't work. People are their to socialise their love for anime, they're not gonna shut up so one person can make a weak-willed and misjudged argument on a topic they didn't really want to talk about, anyway O:

But the club can hardly play a game of musical chairs without all hell breaking loose... how are we going to have a debate ---- debates never lead to anything good T_T

It's called doing something different. And this is also why I'm putting out rules a whole week in advance. (And printing them out to bring in to the club on the day so no one forgets them.)
Plus it'll also show how many are willing to follow some basic rules and prove they can still have a good time.

Regardless of what you do, it's not gonna work. We're not a quiet group, as you can collectively see with your own eyes.
And with 20-odd people there, it's not gonna be quiet at all, and it'll be awkward with people saying "You go, I don't wanna" or they won't get up at all. That's how it works.

And in case you hadn't remembered, the club rules are hardly ever followed, and we all agreed we would stick to them, and look at us so-so weeks later, no change

Wow would you look at that we've begun debateing already XD

yeah jam-chan is kinda right... we are told club things weeks in advance and it 'still' never goes right... its even worse that we're in the room that echos. And debates are too serious its the last thing people want to do because it will all end up in tears... like i said debates never end well.

How are you expected to counter-argue when somebody attacks what you said?

what if the person on your team doesnt share your opinion? or hasnt heard of what youre ment to be debating about?

Then they're on the wrong side XD

Surely it'd be better to have one speaker from each side who can talk freely (but not over the other group's speaker) and then just apply the 'hands up' rule to anyone else who wants to chime in, then just cycle the speaker every 5 minutes or something.

If it's just a debating free-for-all then the structure of the debate will be lost in the sheer volume of people speaking and it'll devolve into chaos.
