In this keep-fit world we now live in, Nintendo have announced a fun way to keep fit!
Picture the situation. You're out jogging, desperate to lose those extra pounds you gained during Christmas (that's Christmas 2007 - you can't even begin to think about 2008 yet). You're so so tired, maybe you'll give up. Yes, have a rest.
PIKA PIKA CHU!!! Suddenly you have the strength to go on.
That's right; Nintendo have announced a pedometer/cyber pet hybrid in the form of the Pokémon Pikachu! We gather the Pokémon Pikachu will simply sit in your pocket (or attach to a belt) and gain "Watts" for every step you take, hence encouraging physical exercise (or attaching it to your washing machine). 20 steps will earn you 1 Watt, which can be used to buy presents for your little Pikachu or even (and this is the clever bit),
sent via wireless to your Diamond, Pearl or Platinum game, letting you unlock items there! That's what the GS on the unit stands for - global satellite. How clever. Watts can also be won/lost by a simple card based gambling game
And of course, you must regularly interact and play with Pikachu to stop it getting bored.
Apparently if you let it get bored it'll start ignoring you and sulk (sorry but I find that hilarious), making it harder to gain Watts. We also gather it will have an alarm feature, just in case you get so attached to your Pokémon Pikachu that you can't wake up for dreaming about it.
Nintendo tell us that a Japanese release is planned for January 2010, but in a rare twist in marketing the unit will be released here in April!
Fools out there who say it won't work have claimed the basic LED screen is "too yesterday for today" which is quite frankly ridiculous because where would tomorrow leave their argument? The choice of colours - silver or clear - has also been slated, with critics claiming they should be made of Diamond, Pearl or Platinum by now.
Either way, something nice to look out for as we Europeans wait for Platinum for be released."
